Under general direction of the Roads Superintendent: to plan, assign, and direct the work of road crews within Grant Parish; to supervise the maintenance, repair, and construction of roads, culverts, and bridges; to perform highly skilled heavy road construction and maintenance equipment operations; and to do related work as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Incumbents in this class are responsible for supervising and directing the work of assigned Road Maintenance and Landfill Workers in maintaining highways, bridges, municipal and rural roads, and rights-of-way in safe conditions while routinely inspecting all primary and secondary roads in Grant Parish under the direction of the Roads Superintendent. Incumbents in this class are subject to twenty-four hour "call-out" for road related emergencies.
Requirements
In addition to supervisory responsibilities, incumbents must hold and maintain a current Class A CDL, skillfully operate a wide variety of specialized heavy construction and road maintenance equipment, maintain parish bridges, and assist the Roads Superintendent with daily departmental operations.

Summary:
The Mechanic works under the direction of the Superintendent. The Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing parish vehicles and equipment.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

· Keeps vehicles in proper working condition by completing preventative maintenance schedules and updating parts
· Repairs and replaces parts and assemblies such as power and drive trains, electrical systems, air conditioning, fuel, emission, brakes, steering, and hydraulics
· Overhauls, rebuilds, and replaces parts as necessary such as pistons, rods, gears, valves, bearing, carburetors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, pumps, crank shafts, etc.
· Responsible for welding repairs and fabrication
· Ensures vehicles meet all state and federal requirements
· Cleans, washes, and paints vehicles as needed
· Maintains records of services and repairs
· Ensures proper operation of shop equipment by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, calling for repairs, and performing preventative maintenance
· Maintains inventory levels by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipts

Work Environment:
The primary duties of this position are performed in the shop. The shop environment may expose employee to air contaminants, confined workspace, temperature extremes, high places, noise, vibrations, or toxic materials. This position is not limited to the shop and also includes an office environment to complete necessary documents pertaining to the job.
Physical Demands:
As needed to perform the essential functions of the position. Which include but are not limited to:
· Ability to raise or lower objects from one level or another (includes pushing and pulling) (up to 100lbs)
· Ability to walk on uneven or rough natural terrain

Job Description

1. Responds to current and/or prospective customers regarding service connections, disconnections, marketing programs, billing questions and payment arrangements.

Educational/Experience Level:

The Road Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the overall supervision and operation activities of all parish road maintenance and landfill crews.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. The Road Maintenance Supervisor may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
· Supervise the work activities of subordinate employees to ensure work assignments are completed correctly in a timely manner.
· Shift priorities, staff and resources to maximize the productivity and/or effectiveness of the Road's Division of Public Works.
· Establish consistent performance standards and expectations for all assigned staff to help ensure the Division's business objectives are met.
· Complete employee performance evaluations and probationary reports to document and/or correct employee behavior to ensure employee is working at acceptable standards.
· Resolve performance problems by planning and implementing measures to improve employee performance.
· Determine the need for appropriate disciplinary action and apply appropriate disciplinary action for assigned employees following Parish procedures.
· Conduct employment interviews with applicants to hire new staff to ensure proper staffing of the Road's Division.
· Evaluate the effectiveness of staff and submitting recommendations for operational modifications.
· Prepare preliminary work schedules for the crew on a daily basis, assign work and determine job priorities for the assigned crew.
· Formulate operational policies, programs and procedures for the Road Division.
· Instruct crews in the proper methods, procedures and techniques used in road maintenance.
· Inspect and evaluate work in process and the completed work performed by assigned crew members.
· Supervise the installation, repair and maintenance of traffic safety and control devices.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:
Prefer two years of experience as a Road Maintenance lead worker or eight years of experience in road construction or road maintenance work of which two years should have been in a lead worker or supervisory capacity.
Education:
Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
License or Certificate:*
Possession of a valid Louisiana Driver’s License with Class A CDL.*Any license, certification, or registration required for this position shall be maintained (i.e. active and in good standing) at all times during employment with the Grant Parish Police Jury. For continued employment with the Grant Parish Police Jury you must maintain such license, certification, or registration to meet the minimum qualifications of this position.
